The Magic in the Method Book
Many method books offer the ‘nuts and bolts’ but their application in Australian instrumental programs likely differ in context from the USA and UK. This session looks at using method books in creative and collaborative ways; arranging, composing, harmonising, developing aural skills etc, giving students greater agency in their classes and allowing real-life musical skills to flourish. Students benefit by developing musical intuition and understand ‘music’ beyond the printed page.
The method book is an affordable volume of repertoire which can be used more playfully that one may initially expect. Classes can create their own arrangements of pieces and use these transferable skills in their own music making at home for in other contexts. Teachers may find that they don’t need a huge array of books to deliver a diverse and creative curriculum to students!

Community, Creativity & Engagement
This sessions focuses on the importance of developing community in our string programs developing safe and inclusive spaces for students, and putting students at the centre of the learning form to feel genuinely engaged in their own learning. The need to adapt content for students is important and this session looks at supporting differentiation in the classes, especially for those who have specific learning needs and are navigating disability. Lots of adaptable activities will be covered, demonstrating ways where everybody can authentically feel valued and succeed. A focus on group activities and content also develops that community and engagement that makes our programs thrive. Activities covered will support technical, musical and creative outcomes.
